Jekaterna Mirotvortseva lived up to her billing to claim the gold medal in girls’ 5,000 km walk as well as an Estonian record 22.26,01 with temperatures hovering around 25C by the finish in Baku EYOF.

Mirotvortseva is now placed 18th in the IAAF World Rankings,  last record set one month ago in Rakvere was beaten by 20 seconds.

“I was thinking of the victory but I couldn’t be sure in it because the competitors were pretty tough. But it went pretty well and I'm happy with my result. Of course, with victory, too, ”said Mirotvortseva, who outraced the closest rivals by more than a minute.

Mirotvortseva is studying at Sillamäe Kannuka School and is coached by KJK Sillamäe Kalev in Jevgeni Terentjev. “Race walking is not very popular in Estonia - I am almost the only one who does it, but I like it. There is only one formula to win titles while doing it alone: train, train, train,” she added.
